niconico is the Japanese video site where the on-screen scrolling comment format originated — the convention that Bilibili and others later adopted.

Its culture is built around remix, parody, music production and live broadcast, and it retains an archive of Japanese internet culture that exists nowhere else.

Much of the interface and content is Japanese-only, and some features require a premium account, so it is more accessible to viewers who read Japanese than to a general international audience.
