Audio content in China skews more toward paid courses and produced audio drama than the independent-podcast model common in English, and Ximalaya reflects that: a substantial share of its catalogue is sold rather than free.

It is the default listening app for commute and background audio for a very large audience, which makes it the primary distribution channel for Chinese-language audio.
