The Meta Pixel is the tracking code placed on a website that reports visitor actions back to Meta, which is what makes conversion optimization and retargeting possible.

Without it, the advertising system cannot learn which people convert, so campaigns optimize toward clicks rather than outcomes — the single most common reason ad spend underperforms.

Browser privacy changes and consent requirements have reduced what the pixel alone captures, which is why server-side tracking through the Conversions API is now standard practice alongside it.
