Mercari is Japan's largest secondhand trading app, built around individuals selling directly to individuals from a phone.

Its design removed most of the friction of secondhand selling: fixed shipping options with anonymised addresses, escrowed payment released after the buyer confirms receipt, and listing in a few taps.

That combination made resale mainstream in Japan, and the platform now covers everything from clothing to electronics to collectibles.
