JavaScript runs in every web browser and, through Node.js, on the server as well — the only language with that position.

That ubiquity is its defining practical fact: browser behaviour cannot be implemented in anything else without compiling to it, which guarantees the language a role regardless of preference.

Its ecosystem moves quickly, which cuts both ways: capable tooling arrives fast, and code written against a framework three years ago often needs updating to keep building.
